Charleston is South Carolina's second largest city and is known for churches, southern charm, natural beauty and historical places. Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the country. Because of the numerous gorgeous churches in the city, Charleston is also known as "The Holy City." Charleston played a significant role during the Civil War, so it is a city that is rich with history.
In 1670, a settlement was established on the west bank of the Ashley River. The settlers named it Charles in honor of Charles II. A year later, they rebuilt between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The nation's oldest museum, Charleston Museum, was established, and in 1770, College of Charleston taught its first classes, making it the oldest municipal college in the nation. The city was renamed Charleston in 1783.
The first major victory during the Revolutionary War occurred at the Battle of Fort Sullivan, and the official start of the Civil War took place in 1860 at Fort Sumter. The war in Charleston came to a close in April 1865 when the union flag was lifted over Fort Sumter. Jim Crow Laws were enforced after Reconstruction, so blacks were permitted to vote. While visiting the city, you can still see numerous historic homes and plantations that have been preserved since the Civil War era.
Charleston International Airport, the busiest airport in South Carolina is located in Charleston. The airport uses the same runways as the nearby Charleston Air Force Base. Numerous major airlines fly into and out of the airport.
